Tissue banking generally traces its roots to the US Navy tissue bank in Bethesda, Maryland. The tissue bank was founded in 1949 to provide allografts for veterans coming back from war with injuries.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the tissue banking industry saw a rapid expansion in the size and scope of tissue banks. With the rapid expansion, a greater emphasis was placed on the safety of the tissue being processed. This led to organizations being formed to provide more uniform standards and various government agencies giving oversight to ensure that tissue is safely and responsibly used.

Today, the tissue banking industry is developing more and more advanced allografts to treat patients with all sorts of injuries and illnesses.
